A woman has won an employment tribunal against Leeds United football club. Yvonne Campbell, who is black, said she had been victimised and discriminated against by her manager and that she had been passed over for promotion four times.
Campbell had been employed by the club since 1992 and had risen to the role of assistant banqueting manager but said that she had been overlooked for more senior positions despite having 30 years experience in the catering trade. She also said that her catering manager, Alan Hegarty, who is still employed by Leeds United, had made a series of racial comments, referring to ethnic minority members of staff as “jungle bunnies” and “tree swingers”.
The tribunal heard that the football club only employs four people from ethnic minorities out of 128 which does not include the playing staff and it concluded that there had been a complete disregard of equal opportunities policies and procedures.
Another hearing, to determine the extent of Miss Campbell’s compensation, will take place next week.
