A Sheffield employment tribunal has heard claims that a Chesterfield firm had a male-dominated culture where bosses openly discussed potential female recruits and judged them by their bra size rather than their suitability for the job.

Angelina Ashby is claiming constructive dismissal and pay and sex discrimination against marine supplies firm Cathelco and says that she became an outcast within the firm after complaining about manager Pete Smith and his deputy discussing female candidates in front of the sales team. She also says that Smith put a female colleague over his knee and spanked her on the bottom.

Giving evidence, Alina Taylor said that she left the firm after an affair with Smith and she had also heard the pair discussing girl’s bra sizes. She said that men would regularly watch pornography on their computers and “gather round laughing”.

The firm denies Miss Ashby’s claims with Smith claiming that she became unmanageable after she sent him a Valentine card and her feelings were not reciprocated. Other managers described her as “not being a team player”.
