An inquest on a Batley man who died from injuries first caused at work, has recorded a verdict of accidental death.

In April 2007 Tom Whitmarsh was working as a roofing contractor on the Menai Shopping Centre in Bangor, north Wales, when he fell through a hole in the roof. He suffered a massive brain injury and contracted meningitis and epilepsy. Just over two years later, following a seizure, he had a heart attack and died, aged just 24.

The Health and Safety Executive is still investigating the accident to determine whether main contractors, Watkin Jones Ltd, should face prosecution. After the inquest jury’s verdict, Tom’s father Bob, said: “We are relieved the inquest in Bradford is now over but the fact remains that nothing can bring him back to us. We were just coming to terms with Tom’s condition when he died. We only hope that lessons can be learned from his story.”
